Volunteers of the Quarter

Sonia Martinez

Sonia is clearly worthy of recognition not only for her long service as a SCORE mentor, but for her extensive work in community outreach. Sonia has been a SCORE Mentor for ten years. She also serves as the Executive Director of the Mohawk Valley Latino Association. She has generously developed and mentored Latino Women business owners in Central NY and serves as board member on several community non-profit organizations.

Marty Doto

We recognize with deep appreciation Marty’s leadership as Chapter Chair during the period of consolidation when formerly separate chapters in Syracuse, Binghamton, Utica, and Auburn, were combined to form the Central NY Chapter. The outcome is a well performing team, and his efforts serve as a fine leadership model for our chapter and others facing organizational challenges.

Joe Morrison

We welcome Joe on board as a new SCORE volunteer and recognize his clear commitment to mentoring as evidenced by the fast pace with which he completed his certification and has begun serving clients. He “hit the ground running” in a noticeable way!

SCORE Workshop with a lady at the podium

On Thursday, April 25 representatives from SCORE CNY attended PALANTE – LATINAS IN ENTREPRENEUERSHIP, SOCIAL INNOVATION, AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT. It was a first-year event presented by the Mohawk Valley Latino Association and hosted at Mohawk Valley Community College. The audience was current Latina business owners and those considering starting their own business. The program included inspirational keynote and panelist presentations by accomplished Latinas, and valuable networking with vendors from various support organizations.

Two SCORE Mentors presenting

This past Friday & Saturday, May 3 & 4, the SCORE CNY Team of Dennis Slattery, Faye Williams and James Calabrese attended the Freedom Gathering at The Living Water Church of God in Christ in Syracuse. Faye is one of our mentors and was gracious enough to provide SCORE CNY the opportunity to present and talk to attendees about our services and resources. Dennis did a fine job presenting an overview of SCORE CNY and our capabilities. Faye did a fine job highlighting one of her client success stories - Jamal Finch who recently became the owner of a barber shop where he used to be an employee. Many of the attendees know the Finch family and the story clearly resonated with them.

The Corporate Transparency Act (CTA), part of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 and effective from January 1, 2024, introduces essential changes for U.S. small business owners.

The CTA mandates small business entities to report "beneficial owner" details to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), a bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury.
