Ask SCORE

I’ve owned a successful home security business for a number of years. I put in lots of hours, think I operate efficiently, yet I find myself constantly overwhelmed trying to keep up with what’s going on in the business world and my industry. How do people keep on top of such things?

Though days still have 24 hours, and years are guaranteed to have no fewer than 12 months, it does sometimes seem as if the world is turning faster and faster. Patterns, trends and technologies that seemed rock-solid last year can spike in a different direction at a moment’s notice.

How SCORE Helped

Jeane said SCORE initially had helped her when she owned and operated a large daycare center. After retiring, she called SCORE for assistance with her small hobby-business. "I didn’t really want to bother them, but I needed advice on hiring someone," she said.

After publishing two books, Jeane had become involved with the Redwood Writers Club. Her fellow authors were struggling with distribution of their books, so Jeane decided she would start a small distribution company with the goal of setting up book displays in all the independent coffee shops in Sonoma County.

"I called SCORE and I was amazed as two SCORE consultants showed up. I think one was just starting," she said. "They were really savvy. I brought in a lot of statistics and they helped me with financial planning."

"They sat with me for more than two hours and made a lot suggestions regarding how I should handle hiring an assistant," Jeane said.

More recently, Jeane said she continues to email her SCORE consultant with questions. "It's really nice to know you have someone out there to help me with my small-time business."

How SCORE Helped

After discovering SCORE through an Internet search, Pietro Buttitta of Rosa d'Oro Vineyards was pleasantly surprised when he learned his counselor was also in the wine business. "It was nice because he knows what's going on in the industry," he said.

Pietro had sought out SCORE's assistance with the family winery to figure out ways to take it to the next level. He was told the first step would be to create a business plan. He said John helped significantly with the financials and three-year forecasts. "He explained what the banks want to see and guided me through the plan."

Pietro also attended the SCORE workshop, Finding Funding Sources. "I thought it was a good, general overview.  I liked that the instructor was very open to questions," he said. "I intend to go to other workshops and take advantage of the networking."

He said he also appreciated that the SCORE counseling was free, as the winery was working on a very tight budget and couldn't have afforded paying for business consulting.

Magic Mirror Salon

Jessica recalled that “she got tired of having a boss” and wanted to start her own business. Her Dad sent her to SCORE to learn the ins and outs of the business world. Jessica met with counselors once or twice a week for several months. The “dedicated counselors helped me write a business plan and arrange for needed capital. They even paid me regular visits for the first couple of months making sure I was headed in the right direction.”

How SCORE Helped

In Spring 2004 a then 19 year old HS graduate walked into the SCORE office in Carmel, NY. Jessica Olsen had decided to open her own beauty salon and was seeking help. Five years later Ms. Olsen was recognized by that same SCORE office for “creating and maintaining a successful business in Putnam County”.

Five years later the business is thriving. Jessica describes her business as “a full service hair salon dedicated to men women and children. We provide hair extension, air brush tanning and waxing. My childhood friend, Kelly Marmo, is my right hand gal.”

Jessica isn’t planning on sitting still. Her business, Magic Mirror Salon, was recently recognized by a local publication as “Putnam’s Finest Hair Salon”. She says, “My future goal is to purchase an older home and convert it into a full service salon where each room of the dwelling would provide a different type of beauty service.”

We wish Jessica the very best of luck as she guides her business forward and are convinced she will continue the success she has experienced thus far in her young career.
