How SCORE Helped

The Knife Guys opened its doors in May of 2009. At that time, we the owners had little to no idea of all it would take to run a business. SCORE assisted us with start-up and QuickBo0ks classes. They also helped with information regarding banking, obtaining licenses and tax information. They were essential in giving us the grounding and sense of reality necessary to run a day to day business and be successful doing so. We have been in business for five plus years now.


We have a business clientele of over 150 and a walk-in customer list of 245 persons.  SCORE was vital in providing us with information regarding our business plan, marketing, the need of a logo, directing us to legal services, promotionals and dressing for success. We would not be where we are today if it were not for the team of counselors from SCORE.

Fresh Corner Cafe Finds Success with SCORE

While working on his master's degree at the University of Michigan, Noam Kimelman became interested in a project focused on what is known as the "food desert" in Detroit. "Food desert" is referred to the stark, unequal distribution of healthy, affordable food options in the city. The Master of Health Policy major, became very interested in finding ways to improve Detroit's current food situation. After talking with a professor who encouraged him to find a solution to the problem and "make it a reality" Noam took on the challenge and created Food Corner Café.

With the belief that good food has the power to be transformative, Fresh Corner Café works with neighborhood stores to ensure that all Detroiters, including the 70,000 households that do not own a private vehicle, can easily access healthy food options.Fresh Corner Café is invested in giving back to the community and the future of Detroit. The Café pays attention to the nutritional density of ingredients they serve as well as: how they are produced and where they come from. Fresh Corner Café was recognized by SCORE and received the 2014 Young Entreprenuer Award.
