I spent 20 years managing the Intellectual Property Office of SRI International.  During this time, I was instrumental in developing patent portfolios in diverse technologies that were the bases for several successful start-ups.  I was a member of a team that prepared and negotiated agreements for protecting those rights and for commercialization of the technology —e.g., NDAs, license agreements, etc.  Since joining SCORE, I have helped clients in a variety of different businesses with more general business matters—e.g., preparation of business plans, market research, employee relations, etc.

If you have concerns about any aspect of intellectual property important to your business-- process, strategy, cost, licensing, etc. , contact me.

For most of my working career I was self employed as the owner of two retail service businesses in the recreation industry. I have also been employed as a Finance & Operations Manager for a multi business enterprise that was owned by Native Americans. Most recently I was a Small Business Development counselor at Columbia Gorge Community College. During this time I created and taught a Small Business Management (SBM) course for business owners  The SBM course focused on teaching business owners financial management techniques to help them manage their businesses more efficiently and to help them get additional financing. I have also helped many people buy and sell small businesses including valuing an existing business. As a SCORE adviser at the Portland SCORE office I am also helping entrepreneurs get their business ready for seeking equity financing in the local Angel Investment market.

Q: What are limited liability companies (“LLCs”), and what should businesses know
about them?
A: LLCs are a new type of business entity that emerged in the early 1990s. They have many important legal and tax characteristics, but the key ones are these:
  • Liability shield. LLCs provide their owners (called “members”) with a statutory liability shield that is essentially identical to the corporate shield.
