After working in the industry for a number of years, I want to start my own catering business. Conversations with a couple of banks about financing have not been promising, so I’m considering approaching some friends and relatives about borrowing the startup money. Is this a good idea?

When seeking financing help for a small business, many entrepreneurs turn to friends and family, rather than banks or other lending sources. While this approach may avert the stresses associated with loan applications and presentations before strangers, it carries its own set of risks and potential pitfalls.

I’m considering purchasing a local, long-established dance studio. I have the training and skills to run it, but have never bought a business before. What advice can you give me?

Buying an existing small business can expedite one’s way into entrepreneurship. All the upfront effort has been taken care of, as has much of the learning curve. And with staff and resources already in place, you may think stepping in and taking over is all there is to it.

How SCORE Helped

Skate Ahead of WNY is an off-ice hockey training system and is the culmination of years in off-ice training development and research by Jared Byer, CPFT.  He started his career in 1992 and has worked with hundreds of youth to pro athletes around WNY.  As director of hockey performance training at the new Cornerstone Ice Arena (34 Chestnut Street, Lockport NY), Jared and his staff of coaches will run one of the most advanced training systems in the country.  Programs are designed for Youth to Pro athletes in search of enhanced athletic performance. Training is focused on Fitness, Nutrition, and Skills based around games and practices in-season and off. Services are offered to Teams, Groups, Privates and more. Skate Ahead of WNY is an expansion of Made 2 Move Fitness in Williamsville, which has been servicing adult clients for over 7 years.

SCORE mentors have been instrumental in providing experienced guidance in business operations and marketing at Made 2 Move Fitness which was a great help in launching the new venture in 2014. The planning and preparation skills learned through SCORE seminars and coaching were invaluable. This included both traditional and on-line marketing strategies as the business landscape has evolved through social media and Internet markets.

How SCORE Helped

Stephanie began working with SCORE in 2012 after hearing about the organization from the SBA.  She had created a line of natural body products and was selling them at trade shows.  "Initially, Tom from SCORE helped me to get more organized and how to be more effective in my booth at shows," she said.

Even though she had started selling some products at Whole Foods in Texas, she has pulled back her line offering it solely online. "I decided to first develop my website and online status, making sure it's solid - especially the packaging and product mix."

Stephanie added that SCORE helped her to streamline the product line. "It was great to be able to bounce ideas of them, and they gave me experienced feedback.  They also helped with my business strategy and to make decisions," she said.

She added that she likes the counselor’s flexibility as she can email questions and meet them when she's available. "Because I work at nights, SCORE is great for my needs and schedule."

"It's a true mentoring relationship," she said.

Stephanie said her next steps with SCORE will be to discuss how to get back into retail and how to handle adding staff.
