We began our website in May of 2013 with the idea that there were lots of Villagers who needed a way to keep up with what was going on in The Villages while they were up north (i.e., "Snowbirds"). We also saw an opportunity in this marketplace for a completely online, digital news source.

My Successes

Our success has been measured in three particular areas of growth - 1) our overall subscription base/readership numbers, 2) our advertising revenues, and 3) diversity in our website traffic. 1) Subscription Base - We offer a daily email subscription service that is free to all users. We started this service in August of 2013 with approximately 200 subscribers. As of November, 2014, we have over 23,000 registered subscribers. Our goal in the next year is to increase our subscription base by 50 - 75%. 2) Advertising Revenue - We have grown from a handful of advertisers to over 50 local advertising accounts. We have also increased our advertising revenue through our main third-party partner, Google, over 25% since beginning our relationship in March, 2014. 3) Website Traffic Diversity - We have grown to encompass more products and offerings in the past year, including sections for Classifieds, Coupons, and Community Events, among others. These additional sections provide outlets for our visitors to explore while on our website. It has helped us increase our on-time page engagement and our average number of pages viewed for an average website visit.

What's Great About My Mentor?

All whom we have met through SCORE have provided invaluable advice, and Linda Pickwick is no different. She has been a tremendous asset throughout this process, and our development, organization, and focus in sales has improved dramatically since working with her. She has dedicated countless hours to helping us develop sales practices that we will employ in our company for years to come. Furthermore, her breadth of knowledge is evident in the variety of topics she' has helped us with, from establishing new products to resolving common human resources issues. We are grateful to SCORE and Mrs. Pickwick for helping us move forward as a company and, more importantly, as small business owners and entrepreneurs.

How SCORE Helped

SCORE has been a fundamental part of our company's success. Before we went into business, SCORE helped us develop a business plan and helped guide us to answers to some of the more difficult questions that small businesses face. We have met regularly with SCORE for help on marketing and advertising, sales training, financial projections, and a multitude of other issues.

Ask SCORE

I’m confused about the rules for paying employees overtime. Can you explain them to me?

Should you be paying overtime to your employees? The answer is: it depends.

Under the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), employers are required to pay overtime to most hourly employees who work more than 40 hours a week for businesses that take in more than $500,000 a year in revenue.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Content Strategist

Search engines have taken over the ease of online business and one's rank can determine if they grow or diminish in a single click of a button. My experience in search engine optimization (SEO), a relatively young field, began as an intern with an online lead generation company. Its evolved into ghostwriting for online marketing companies and small business owners unfamiliar with the importance of an online presence and/or building a reputable site that reaches a top position on Google, Yahoo and other leading search engines.

If you're trying to figure out the basics of building an online presence, I can help you start this journey. The world of SEO and content marketing is exponential; your progress in building a solid online marketing plan is important no matter how small your company may seem. Growth requires globalization, credibility and organic content that reaches your target market. Search engine optimization (SEO) is a costly venture for most small businesses, but I will introduce techniques and lead you in a direction that exceeds your expectations while staying within your budget.

Your budget means very little when you begin using the millions of tools and media outlets available online. I can introduce you to guerrilla marketing techniques that require very little investment as well as build the level of engagement you have with your current market.

My brother-in-law has approached me about going into business with him in a home cleaning franchise. I’ve always heard one should never go into business with relatives. Is that true?
