Ask SCORE

I’ve owned a successful home security business for a number of years. I put in lots of hours, think I operate efficiently, yet I find myself constantly overwhelmed trying to keep up with what’s going on in the business world and my industry. How do people keep on top of such things?

Though days still have 24 hours, and years are guaranteed to have no fewer than 12 months, it does sometimes seem as if the world is turning faster and faster. Patterns, trends and technologies that seemed rock-solid last year can spike in a different direction at a moment’s notice.

How SCORE Helped

The relationship between SCORE and Corenco, Inc. of Santa Rosa, initially began about 30 years ago when the
company's founder was looking for business advice on expanding sales.

More recently Corencos Vice President of Sales & Marketing Neil Gorsuch had contacted SCORE as "the company was
in the midst of a dark, dark time." Neil said the fact that SCORE offers its business counseling services at no charge was
an important factor. 'We were not in the position at the time that we could pay for help," he said.

At first, John Baillie from SCORE focused on "basic stuff: where we we've been, where we are now, and where we're
going." He said they worked on a business plan, set realistic expectations, and identified how they could execute on the
ideas.

"It's very important to have another set of eyes to look at everything. We were stuck with tunnel vision," Neil said.

Since those initial meetings two years ago with John, Corenco has not only turned around its business, Neil said they're
thriving. "And I definitely give John and SCORE a lot of credit."

Most recently, John brought one of SCOREs marketing experts to work with Corenco, which Neil said was also helpful.
He said he's looking forward to many more years of working together with SCORE.

How I can help you

I worked for 40 years for the Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA), the federal agency that administers Defense Department contracts after they are awarded.  DCMA deals with contractors of all sizes, including small businesses.  My first assignments were in the quality assurance discipline, but later assignments required a knowledge of contract administration and contract payment.  I have helped small businesses resolve quality assurance and contract payment issues.  While working for DCMA, I served as a supervisor, a mid-level manager, and a member of DCMA Headquarters policy staff.  In my supervisory and management assignments, I gained experience with strategic planning, budgeting, staffing, and other management responsibilities.
