In Florida's Collier County, SCORE Naples has helped seniors find new careers or start new businesses.

“Given the economy, a lot of people who come to our workshops have been laid off or want another career opportunity or to start a business,” said George Ahearn, chairman of SCORE Naples. “Giving back to the community is something we do. We can take our wisdom and share it.”

The South Metro chapter of SCORE has been helping small business owners in Minnesota to weather the recession by starting and growing their ventures.

One of the newest ways that SCORE is trying to reach out to small business owners in the community is through free, Google-sponsored seminars. The Minneapolis chapter has already hosted a handful – with great success, said Zielinski – and plans to host more in the coming months. “The seminars are well worth your time,” said Zielinski.

Entrepreneurs to Receive Advice

In a partnership between novices and professionals, 22 of Washington County’s prospective future small business owners finalized business plans with help from SCORE volunteers as part of a project for Shelley Bracken’s entrepreneurship class at Pine View High School.

Bracken felt the students needed additional business expertise and perspective during the formulation of their plans, so she contacted Paul Campbell, chairperson for the local SCORE organization, early in the semester.  After one session with the SCORE volunteers, students were elated.

SCORE Reaches for Hispanics

SCORE Naples partnered with Naples-based Media Vista Group to develop a 13-episode interactive series for Spanish-speaking business owners that will kick off in July and air on Azteca America TV on Sundays at 9 a.m.  The growth in the Hispanic population drove SCORE’s attention to focus more on the business community. The 2010 U.S. Census found roughly 26 percent of the population in Collier County is Hispanic. That comes out to about 83,000 people. In 2000, they made up roughly 19 percent of the population for an estimated 49,000 Hispanics.

"I feel that coming from a family of migrant workers really rooted my work ethic. My grandparents, on my mother's side, raised me and taught me about goals," Raul Cantu, owner of Nacho Mama's in Richmond, Virginia, said.

While Cantu had plenty of experience running a restaurant, he'd never owned a business before. Unsure of what to do next — and concerned about whether to take the plunge — he turned to SCORE, an organization with ties to the Small Business Administration that gives free advice to small businesses.

Sisters Carry on Shamrock Inn Tradition

Vickie Elgersma and Tama King are advancing their grandparents’ legacy with their own new business venture, Guinn Special Recipes.  The sisters have been working for more than a year to turn their sought-after family recipes into a product for the grocery shelves. Their first production batch has been completed and distribution has begun across the Hy-Vee Food Store chain.
