Gwen Campbell is highly educated and works as a researcher for the Navy, but none of that seemed to matter a few years ago when she tried to start a business from home.

"I've always been on the academic path, I have a Ph.D ... but I never knew anything about business. I had no idea. Every single thing was new to me," said Campbell, who runs GwynHug, an online company that sells fabric reference cards for sewers.

Campbell worked with the Central Florida chapter of SCORE to gain the business knowledge she lacked and get her business of the ground.

SCORE Honors 4 Businesses it Helped Get Off the Ground

The Youngstown chapter of SCORE on Wednesday recognized four of the businesses it has helped in the past year.

Susan McConnell, owner of New Wilmington Child & Family Counseling, said SCORE provided her with advice that first helped her open her business on a contract basis and then in the transition to full time.  “They also helped me with marketing and with the creation of a website, which I’m very proud of,” she said.
