Washington, D.C.—The SCORE Association "Counselors to America's Small Business" surpassed its record-breaking previous year with a 7 percent increase in outreach to entrepreneurs in fiscal year 2003, which ended September 30, 2003. More than 360,000 entrepreneurs and small business owners turned to SCORE for free and confidential business counseling, training workshops and seminars.

BEST Business Plan Contest Announces Winners SCORE Counselors Judged Entries; Contest Conducted by Ford and DiversityInc.

Washington, D.C.—The winners of the “Building Entrepreneurial Success Today” (BEST) business plan competition have been announced by Ford Motor Company. Volunteer counselors from SCORE “Counselors to America’s Small Business” served as judges in the contest, conducted by Ford and DiversityInc., selecting the winners from a pool of more than 1,200 entrants.

Washington, D.C.—The SCORE Association will mark its 40th anniversary of providing business counseling and training to small businesses at a White House reception in the Indian Treaty Room of the Old Executive Office Building on April 21. The White House recognition of SCORE’s 10,500 volunteer counselors coincides with National Volunteer Week (April 18-24).

Washington, D.C.─Paul Kopelcheck, of Hilton Head, South Carolina, has been elected to serve as a member of the board of directors for the SCORE Association “Counselors to America’s Small Business.” In this role, Kopelcheck will guide the national, nonprofit’s strategic direction that supports America’s small businesses through business counseling. He began his term on June 3, 2003.

Washington, D.C.—The SCORE Association recently received a national Award of Excellence from the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE). The honor was part of ASAE’s 2004 Associations Advance America Awards. The Award of Excellence honor makes SCORE eligible for the Associations Advance America Summit Award, the highest level of recognition for association programs given by ASAE, presented in October 2004.

SCORE “Counselors to America’s Small Business” Honors the Late Lenny Kattan with Its Highest National Award for Volunteer Service

Washington, D.C.—The SCORE Association will present the Walter H. Channing Award of Excellence posthumously to Lenny Kattan of Orange County SCORE. Kattan is survived by his wife Marilyn Kattan, who will accept the award. The Walter H. Channing Award is the highest award presented by SCORE to volunteers who further the organization’s mission of providing business counseling and training to America’s entrepreneurs.
