Fellow, Society of Actuaries & Member, American Academy of Actuaries, with particular focus on health insurance. Executive positions (Senior Vice President) in two major insurers, The Travelers Insurance Co. and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Roles included pricing responsibility, serving as chief financial officer responsible for financial planning and reporting, and coordination of the business plan development for a major division. Also served as head of a strategic business unit (SBU) focusing on providing life, health, and disability insurance to small businesses with up to 50 employees. As head of the SBU had full top line and bottom line responsibility including all operational phases and strategic planning. Served as national director, health care actuarial consulting, with Arthur Andersen. For 10 years after retiring from full time employment operated my own actuarial consulting business, BWButler Actuarial Consulting Ltd.

I have extensive experience in managing financial institutions having held ownership positions in several small Kansas banks. I was President of First Community Bank, Emporia, Ks; President of Commerce Savings & Loan, Shawnee, Ks: president of Los Alamos National Bank, Los Alamos, NM. At various times I owned a small insurance agency, a small real estate agency and continue to own an 18 unit shopping center in Topeka, Ks with my son & wife. In between ownership in the banks I worked as a bank consultant doing business plans, budgets and policies for several Kansas banks.
I am a graduate of Kansas State University with a BS in agricultural economics, post graduate studies in economics at Wichita State University and a graduate degree in banking and finance from the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking, Southern Methodist University.
I have over 50 years of retail experience. From working for my father when I was in middle and high schools to being the Chief Operating Officer of three major retailers, I have developed a wide range of skills that span other industries. I love to help business managers solve problems and to build teams making operations more efficient and more profitable. My areas of responsibility have included Finance, IT and E-business support, Logistics, Human Resources, Loss Prevention, Store Operations, Real Estate & Leasing, Store Planning and Construction. I am an avid golfer and not so avid of a fly fisherman and photographer.
