My name is David Lichter, the Founder and Owner of Lock Horns. Our locking system patent is the foundation for our first product to market: Wheel Locks… that Actually Lock!™ I have been a scientist in the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and medical device industries for over 20 years, and am now applying my expertise in organization, problem-solving, and the scientific method, to entrepreneurship, to create, innovate, and drive progress. In 2009 I woke up to my new car on cinder blocks, wheels nearly stolen. After searching the market unsuccessfully for a higher quality wheel locking system, I finally decided to ‘reinvent the wheel’ lock to create a superior theft deterrent, and ‘lock horns’ with thieves to help millions of vehicle owners protect themselves and their families.
As I began to turn my idea into a patent and business, I quickly learned that there is no set protocol to entrepreneurship. This is exciting but also can be a daunting path for someone like me, a scientist who excels at following organized procedures. A friend told me about the free business mentorship SCORE provides, and for someone starting in this field, it sounded too good to be true – building a trusting relationship with, and learning from, successful businesspeople. Well, it was as advertised, has exceeded my expectations, and has been 'too good to be true'! My mentor, Elena Chernokalskaya, is a scientist and small business owner, and understands how my mind works. She has provided stellar advice, positive reinforcement, and wise recommendations, as I made critical decisions in starting my business. She brought in another bright mind, John Mar, an automotive industry veteran, who has added invaluable mentorship and tips on important topics relevant to my product. I feel very fortunate to have them on my team, aim to learn and succeed with Lock Horns, and then hope to one day pay it forward and return the favor to other entrepreneurs.
