Looking for ways to improve your business's SEO (search engine optimization)? In the SCORE Small Business Success Podcast, “SEO Basics for Small Business,” Dana Lookadoo, of  Yo! Yo! SEO gives tips and provides resources for small business owners to improve their online presence.

When it comes to having a strong SEO presence, Lookadoo says there are 3 categories small business owners should focus on: local, mobile, and social. Finding ways to engage your consumers through local, mobile, and social platforms can help boost your SEO results.

1. Local: “Consistency  has a trickle-down effect”

Building your business's SEO presence begins on a local level through online customer reviews and even directories. Lookadoo says it’s important to remember  “NAP” when you are creating your business cards and updating your online contact information. “NAP” stands for: name, address, and phone number. It’s important to have your business name, address, and phone number consistent online as well as in print. “Search engines look for consistency even through phone numbers.”  A  good rule of thumb is to use the standard parentheses and hyphens for your phone number. The more consistent you are, the easier your customers can find you.

2. Mobile: “If you don’t have a website, you are missing out on a lot of opportunities”

A study shows that “86 million people are searching for local businesses via mobile phones.” More than ever, consumers are using their phones to find businesses to support their needs.  It is important to have a clean website that allows customers to easily find relevant information.  Remember, your website affects your business credibility. People are more likely to trust and engage with a business that has a website which is updated, consistent, and easy to navigate.

3. Social: “Nearly the whole world is on Facebook”

Discoverability and visibility is the fastest way  to improve SEO and utilizing a Facebook page is a great way to connect with your customers and provide customer service.   Taking advantage of social sites and techniques such as  Facebook and blogging can yield great SEO results. Creating a blog is the number one way to engage with your consumers and create visibility.

Lookado says  “link building” is important as well; “think of link building as relationship building.” Listing links to other websites that provide important content for your customers is important.  Not only are you forging new relationships with other businesses, you are boosting your SEO results while providing relevant information to your customer.

Creating visibility and discoverability for your business  is important when looking to improve your SEO. Tailoring your business resources to fit your consumers on a local, mobile and social level is a great way to jumpstart positive SEO results.
