In the recent SCORE webinar: "5 Steps to Grow a Strong Online Presence," SCORE Mentor Edison Guzman shares tips on how small businesses can grow a strong online presence in five steps.

Below are five steps you can take to grow a strong online presence for your small business.

Establish your brand

Your website address is your online brand!  It’s important to take every chance to market your website address. You can market your brand on many different marketing platforms. Business cards, ads, signs, e-mail address signatures, social media pages and other online and offline marketing opportunities are great ways to establish your brand and let others know about your business.

Engage with content

“You want to engage with content, because content is something that will help rank higher in search engines and help people to find you easier,” says Edison. When creating content, you should also make your content “key word rich”. It’s very important to use titles and words that people will likely search for. Newsletters, videos, articles and blogs are useful platforms to use when creating content.

Find customers

Three effective ways to find and engage with new customers are:

  • email marketing
  • social media marketing, and
  • search engine marketing (SEM).

This three areas allow you to target specific markets easily and accurately, are often free to use, instant and you are able to reach a world-wide audience as well as a local audience.

Market and monetize

“It’s important to prepare your online assets to support your revenue plan,” says Edison. Selling or just advertising online at a minimum means: capturing leads, processing leads, taking orders, processing payment, communicating for support and automating your sales force.

Prepare for the next step

"There are still plenty of options for small businesses to further their online presence,” says the SCORE mentor. Small business owners should invest in their web presence and they can do so by:

  • making the jump from a social page to a full website
  •  optimizing their site for mobile access
  • adding more visual content or tools such as customer reviews, and
  • using multiple websites to target different markets
