Nailing down your business pitch can help you get what you need, whether it’s funding, finding a co-founder, securing a strategic partner or speaking to the press.  It might seem like a no brainer that we - as business owners - can explain our businesses and get what we need. However, the reality is that most of us don’t have a succinct ‘pitch’ nailed down that we can easily communicate and convey to our audience.

Watch these short before-and-after pitches from two entrepreneurs trying to grow their respective businesses. The first is EnduraGuide (click link to watch video), a sports community/app and the second is HeartJuice, a new product that’s now being distributed in Whole Foods. The differences in the before and after ‘pitches’ are startling; especially with Miriam in EnduraGuide--- who rambled on and on in the ‘before’ pitch but nailed it right in the first second of the ‘after’ pitch.

Think about your own business pitch- what is it? Can you convey a compelling pitch to me in 30 seconds or less? Try it and see. I met with Laura Allen, founder and pitch expert of 15SecondPitch, who talked to me about key elements for an effective pitch, whether you have 15, 30 or 60 seconds to nail your elevator pitch.  These include:

1)      Who you are: Introduce yourself. “Hello , my name is XXX”.

2)      What’s your business/idea--- State in one sentence what your business is. Make it simple so anyone can understand…think brain-dead.

3)      What makes your business/product special? Why are you the best - in one sentence, state why you’re so special. This is your chance to go big, so don’t downplay your talents. Make sure you convey why you’re the best.

4)      Call to action: End your pitch with a specific call to action so you can connect again. Give them a reason to want to follow up with you again.

Most people get the first two elements but they often fail to consider #3 and #4 and these last two elements are the most important. They’re what will set you apart and help you get what you want. Watch the short video to see how to craft your perfect pitch!
