My successes.

Hernandez started by paying all the vendors to whom the company owed money when she took over. She then hired new employees that fit with her vision for the company. After she got the business stabilized, she began marketing to brides in the middle price range, ended contracts with vendors and designers that were not performing well, and hired a full-time seamstress, turning the business into a full-service bridal salon. In doing all this, she both saved the business and increased cash flow.

How SCORE helped.

Hernandez initially sought advice about buying the business and her mentor, Cellia Bell, both encouraged her and pointed out potential trouble spots. Bell also helped Hernandez become familiar with how business is done in the U.S.

How Did Your Business Get Started?

Mélange Bridal is one of the only bridal salons in Austin, Texas, where you can both purchase a designer wedding dress and get in-house alterations. Proprietor Ivana Hernandez owned her own bridal business in Croatia for over ten years before she took over Mélange Bridal in 2012. When she purchased the business, it was bleeding money and on the verge of closure. As the new owner, Hernandez has turned the business around.
