Consumers are mobile…are you?

According to one Kissmetrics study, 78% of mobile searches for local business information result in a purchase. With this many consumers making purchasing decisions on-the-go, why is it that, according to BuzzBoard data, 47.3% of all small business websites across the US are not mobile-ready? Other data sources show even larger numbers are unprepared.

Consumers have embraced mobile search and apps as primary tools to find local business information and they are not waiting for your small business to catch up. According to Google, there are now more searches happening on smartphones than desktop computers. Even more stunning is the fact that 80% of all mobile phone users in the U.S. now own a smartphone.

Consumers search for a variety of information about your company on their smartphones. Some consumers may be searching for your local business’s addresses, some want to know your contact information and some may want to read customer reviews of your business to make a purchasing decision.

In order for consumers to find and remember your business, it is crucial for you to have a strong mobile presence. However, only half of small businesses have a website at all, let alone a mobile-ready one. Of the half of small businesses that don’t have a website, it is interesting to note that 32% said it was because a website was “irrelevant to their business.” See the chart below for the other reasons small businesses don’t have websites.

Of the small businesses that have a website a large percentage wish it was better, more polished or professional. These businesses often have a very basic or “generic” site that doesn’t serve them any longer or project the image they’d like to convey to their consumers.

In a survey conducted by Thrive Analytics, 40% of small businesses said they are going to increase their budgets for websites by 10-15% within the next 12 months. This proves that small businesses know the value of a strong web presence, and now they just need help optimizing their websites for mobile to match their expectations.

Despite the difficulties, if your small business wishes to capture your audience’s attention, it is imperative that you optimize your website for mobile. Consumers are searching for you on their smartphones, so that is where you need to be visible.
