| “SCORE was an important part of helping put my business on a solid footing,” Libby says. “I worked with the volunteer counselors on my business plan, as well as the monthly filing requirements for a one-person business. I was also able to obtain advice on how best to allocate my assets, whether in investment mediums or back into my company.”
SCORE also helped Libby with some long-term issues such as employees and the creation of a construction business. “My insurance company was reluctant to have both design and building work under the same company,” she explains. “SCORE advised me on how to set up that business, and the requirements for managing both sides.”
Libby’s patience paid off in 2002 when she took a voluntary layoff from Boeing in order to give her full attention to eas design and eas builders nw. Though her company is purposely small—consisting of herself and husband/CFO Lee—Libby is encouraged by her progress to date. “Both businesses are going well,” she says proudly. “I recently completed a home remodeling assignment worth $110,000, and my advertising campaign is helping spread the word about what I can offer.”
And whenever she has a question about managing or growing her business, Libby knows that the advisors at SCORE are just a phone call or visit away. “I do like to talk with a retired professional from time to time as a checkpoint to make sure I’m on the right track,” she says. “SCORE is a good resource for anyone who needs help understanding how a business works, and what mistakes to avoid.”
