Florist Obtains Startup Funding, Faces Accounting Challenges

"About seven years ago, two young ladies came to the SCORE office in Indianapolis to talk about starting a floral business in an area vacated by a person one of them worked for. They were recommended to me by a lady who has cut my hair for 30 years who happened to be the mother of one of the young ladies and was also starting her new business, a day spa and salon.

I worked with the two of them to develop their business plan and they were able to get a loan and start the business in a small shop. They specialized in weddings and saw their business grow rapidly, almost doubling each year! They soon outgrew their facility and moved to one three times as large, and are now one of the premier florists in Indianapolis.

Their main problem while growing was a lack of financial information from their accountant - I advised them to get a new accountant, which they did. The mother also started her new business and is quite successful. Counseling a mother and her daughter at the same time was unusual and very rewarding for me."
