Children can be a never-ending source of worry, joy, entertainment, and if you’re lucky, sometimes even inspiration. That was the case for entrepreneurs Joanna and Andrea Dayco who were inspired by a bedtime ritual of “The Wishlist.” Each night, kids and parents alike would offer up what they wished to do the following day – whether it be hosting a playdate, doing arts and crafts or grabbing a coffee with a friend (for Mommy) - but often times these wishes got lost in the day to day hassle of errands and constant shuttling about town. Then one night it finally clicked – why not create a place where parents and kids alike could achieve all they wished for in a day? Suddenly the vision for Kookaburra Play Café, a premium indoor play facility for children and a modern coffee house setting where parents can relax and enjoy while the children play in a creative, clean, safe and friendly atmosphere, was born. Joanna and Andrea had the vision, passion and drive to make it happen. They turned to SCORE for help in researching, planning and preparing to obtain the financing they needed.
Kookaburra Café has become a vibrant hub of the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. The team has managed to develop a strong sense of community not only through their unique play space and café combination but also with the addition of classes, special events and private parties.
“Our advisor, Earl Shraiberg’s guidance with our business plan was essential for obtaining our SBA loan,” Joanna said. Earl worked with the duo extensively to create a business plan with its roots in solid market research. The group continues to collaborate offering advice, guidance and encouragement as needed.
