The Client:

Multimedia designer Leslie Taylor had owned a freelance design company with her husband, Jeff, before having children and taking a corporate marketing job. Taylor always wanted to be her own boss again, and after attending a SCORE seminar on starting a business, she began planning for the launch of Buffalo Creative Group in 2013.

The Challenge:

Although Taylor had 15 years of experience in multimedia design, including Web and print work, she needed help finding clients after being in the corporate world for so long. In August 2013 she began meeting with SCORE mentors Maxwell E. Ellis, a former advertising executive and ad agency owner, and attorney Fred Witherby.

The Solution:

Witherby counseled Taylor on the legal structure of her business, while Ellis advised her on generating leads and negotiating with clients. “Max suggested I be proactive in networking and join groups such as the Rotary Club and Chamber of Commerce,” Taylor says. Contacts in those organizations have led to new business and referrals.

Taylor has also found success through social media; for example, she has held giveaways on her company’s Facebook page to promote interest. Ellis also helped her build her connections on LinkedIn, suggested ways to post on LinkedIn in order to make herself more visible, and advised her on which LinkedIn groups to join to cultivate new business. “I found one of my best clients through LinkedIn,” Taylor says.

The Results:

After less than a year in business, Buffalo Creative Group has obtained steady clients and is on track to meet sales goals for 2014. Working with two independent contractors, and with Taylor’s husband, Jeff, handling Website development and maintenance for clients, the company handles online and multimedia projects, print design and video.

“Starting my own business was a little scary, so it was nice to be in the company of people who had done it themselves and who I could rely on to answer my questions,” says Taylor, who still meets with Ellis on a regular basis. “In business, most people you meet want to get something from you, but SCORE is there to help you, with no bias or agenda.”
