SCORE & HP Team Up to Educate Small Businesses on Disaster Planning

Washington, D.C.—SCORE “Counselors to America’s Small Business” and HP announce a free disaster recovery workshop for small businesses in Houston on June 7, titled “Plan, Prepare, Recover—Keeping Your Business Safe.” The event will be held at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. It is the first in a series of events across the United States.

According to government statistics, 93 percent of companies that had trouble restoring their data after a disaster were out of business within 18 months. Each year, due to storms, floods, fires or the unexpected hard drive collapse, an alarming number of small businesses lose irreplaceable customer data, invoices, tax documents and other critical materials.

At the workshop, business owners will gain insight into the steps they can take to keep their business safe, along with simple solutions for protecting core assets, including customer records, accounting systems, technology, records and databases, from any number of unexpected occurrences.

“The best time to respond to a disaster is before it happens,” said SCORE CEO Ken Yance. “Combining SCORE’s disaster preparedness and recovery expertise with HP’s knowledge of security and data protection will help prepare small businesses for disaster.”

“HP not only has a long history of supporting small business, we started as a small business,” said John Dayan, vice president of marketing and business development – Americas, Personal Systems Group, HP. “We understand the needs that small businesses have and are excited to be working with SCORE to provide insight to small business on how to prepare for disasters large and small.”

More information about the workshop is online at www.score.org/HP_events.html. Register for the Houston event at www.bmmreg.com/hps. The next workshop will be in St. Louis on June 26. Other upcoming workshops will be in Atlanta, Los Angeles, Orange County, Chicago, New York City and Portland, Ore.
