Two years ago, Holly Thrasher was watching a Food Network television show about candy stores, and suddenly "a light bulb went off."
"My father is an entrepreneur. I have a degree in business, and already was managing a store. I thought, 'Why can't I, with all my experience, open up my own candy store?' " she said.
Thrasher quickly learned that coming up with an idea for a business was actually the easy part. What she needed was some guidance on how to write a business plan, but the business books she read for information were vague and didn't offer the extent of help she was looking for.
Thrasher came across a website for SCORE, a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. She then attended one of several Saturday business workshops held by the Ventura County chapter of SCORE, whose counselors helped her with the business plan.
