SCORE “Counselors to America’s Small Business” Recognizes Its Volunteers’ Efforts to Assist Entrepreneurs Nationwide
Washington, D.C.—The SCORE Association pays tribute to its more than 10,500 counselors during this year’s National Volunteer Week (April 18-24) for their donation of time and expertise to help America’s new and emerging small businesses. For 40 years, SCORE volunteer counselors have blended two uniquely American ideas—volunteerism and entrepreneurship. The theme of National Volunteer Week, “Volunteers Inspire by Example!” illustrates how the experience of SCORE volunteers serves as a model for new entrepreneurs to follow.
SCORE business counselors are working and retired business owners and executives who volunteer their time to provide business advice and training to entrepreneurs in all stages of business development. SCORE volunteers delivered 473,136 services to entrepreneurs in 2003 through face-to-face and email counseling, workshops and seminars. In 2003, SCORE counselors donated more than 1.4 million hours of their time to help entrepreneurs in their area. They understand the needs of local businesses because they know their communities.
SCORE CEO Ken Yancey says, “SCORE’s volunteers have a positive impact on American small business.” Yancey adds, “They help entrepreneurs form business plans, meet the challenges of daily business operations and take advantage of opportunities by providing counseling and training on the range of business topics.”
The advice SCORE counselors donate is of untold value. A comparison of the total hours donated by SCORE volunteers to a standard consulting fee of $150 per hour shows that the total amount of time donated for SCORE services in 2003 would cost entrepreneurs $213.6 million. In addition to their years of business experience, the men and women who serve as SCORE counselors are also established members of the community, who can easily relate to their fellow citizens.
Since 1964, the SCORE Association has assisted more than 6.5 million aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners through counseling and business workshops. More than 10,500 volunteer business counselors serve their communities through entrepreneur education dedicated to the formation, growth and success of small businesses.
