Was a one-company-man, working 30 years for the Amstar Corporation, a small conglomerate and the largest producer of sweetener products in the United States. A few of its well-known brand names are Milwaukee Electric Tools, Domino Sugar in the East and Spreckels Sugar in the West, Duff-Norton hoists and jacks, and Milford saw blades. At its peak, Amstar employed around 8,000 men and women. Howard was on the corporate staff as the chief personnel officer (CPO) and directed the corporate human resources efforts when Amstar went through two management buy-outs. At the conclusion of the second buy-out, Howard retired at age 53 and with four other associates purchased two of Amstar's electronic companies and merged them into one called REICO, Inc. REICO employed 200 and custom designed and manufactured signal distribution systems, micro-wave antennas, and radio receivers for the defense intelligence communities of the United States and its NATO allies. Howard as a principal was on the board and served as corporate secretary and chief administrative officer. After five years of commuting weekly between CT and VA, he retired for the second and last time. Howard joined SCORE in CT and then later in FL served as our chairman in FY 2000-2001. |
