International Trade, Imports / Exports

Jack G Peltier

The goals of my business life were always the management of Global Operations. “Global” is a new term for what was called “International”. After two years in the Army, another two years with IBM provided me with the best possible business education. After my request to be transferred to IBM World Trade Corporation was turned down, I joined Scripto, Inc. then a vibrant, middle-sized company with a large export department. My job was to learn the export business by manning every desk of the export department. I learned by doing, not just watching. Three years later and a degree of International Economics in my back pocket, I was Assistant Export Manager, and I was ready to take the next step. I found it when I joined The Lee Company, makers of work wear and jeans. After product training, I opened Lee’s international office in Manhattan, starting out with $300,000 of export business in 5 countries. With the help of a dedicated team, we grew the business into an 8 figure sales number in less than 9 years and created a 15 licensee program which substantially added to our consistently good bottom line. This played a part in my nomination to corporate VP of VF Corporation who acquired the Lee Company. My new job consisted in managing all global operations, and as President-International, I headed an organization consisting of a large export business, 4 European subsidiaries , 5 international joint ventures , 29 licensees and distribution in 103 countries. After several successful years, I left the corporate world and pursued a consulting career in import-export assistance in several industries, international industrial development, turn-around situations and re-organizations of global divisions, China trade and the development and management of U.S. business with Russia . I have been a SCORE member for several years and , locally, I mentor small businesses and startups. I also continue to be available to assist clients nationally in the challenging environment of global business. Industry Extensive general management experience in all the principal areas of US and international operations. Principal areas of concentration were startup, recruiting, staffing and training of management groups. to supervise and expand US and overseas subsidiaries to negotiate, organize and supervise global joint ventures to manage a multi-brand licensing operation to identify, qualify and recommend international mergers and acquisitions to participate in M&A negotiations and integration of the acquired companies Consulting Consulting consisted in structuring corporations for a global approach, and as the representative for a large Finnish and Scandinavian network, to assist US exporters in the development and the logistics of their business with Russia and former Soviet states.
