“Why wouldn’t you want to learn from the experience of others?” says Bob Godlasky, a mentor and counselor with SCORE OC in Santa Ana, Calif. “There’s value in getting nonfamily, nonfriends' points of view. It’s amazing what we can’t see until someone with no particular bias reviews the same picture or the same data.”

Portland, Oregon business owners Carol Ellis and Serge Ouattara discuss how they've made their venture, Tré Bone, prosper and expand despite ending their marriage.  SCORE Portland helped the pair develop a solid business plan, replicate that model in a second location and obtain financing.

“Serge had a viable business model and a good track record,” says Joanna Mehaffey, a West Coast Bank vice president. “I was also aware that Serge had worked with SCORE, which can be a very helpful tool for business owners.”

A year ago, Melanie Camp worked long hours as an executive director for a division of Lockheed Martin, one of the nation's largest defense contracting companies.  Today, Camp, 48, employs her corporate skills as the new owner of a bed-and-breakfast in Door County, Wisconsin, on the shores of Lake Michigan.

She downloaded free templates from SCORE.org to create business plans, spreadsheets and financial statements to help her business get started on the right track.

Marcelo Zelicovich and Rolando Epstein teamed up to create and launch Doctor Aromas', an air freshening system that works through a building's HVAC system.  The duo has landed several big name clients but they were still struggling to successfully market and grow their business to the next level. Paulus Sutrisna, owner of PS Scrubs in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania said he had a bad year financially in 2010 and considered closing in 2011.  "We just didn't have enough customers and we needed to pay our bills," Sutrisna said. "I was considering closing when my wife told me to call my original business counselor from SCORE."
