Pick of the Planet Garden Center Opens with Help from SCORE

The Pick of the Planet recently opened its new wholesale and retail garden center in Greenland, New Hampshire.

Owner Ellen Mitchell said she turned to SCORE, a nonprofit association dedicated to helping small businesses get off the ground and supported by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

"I wanted some professional input and had a great experience with SBA when I first started my business in 1999," she said.

Michael O’Malley of Fairfield County SCORE set out looking for ways to haul SCORE into the social media era, and as it turned out it was Generation Y that found him.

As much as a rebounding economy, chapter leader O’Malley chalks up Fairfield County SCORE’s more recent gains to efforts to run ongoing workshops, now numbering more than 100 for the calendar year – with several addressing emerging technologies such as cloud computing and social media.

Al Youngwerth bought a clutch to put on his children’s motorbike a few years back. But the thing was always breaking down.  So in 2002, he developed his own clutch and started a company to make it.  Rekluse Motor Sports now has 40 employees in Boise, Idaho and sells about 10,000 clutches a year that sell for $400 to $900 each.

The Guardian Life Small Business Research Institute wanted to find out so it commissioned a study to compare what owners of small firms with rising 2011 revenues did differently than their counterparts at businesses with flat or declining sales.

Hispanic Small Business Seminar Holds Graduation on November 11, 2011

The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Partnership with the Greater Bridgeport chapter of SCORE, the SBA and the City of Bridgeport Small and Minority Business Resource Office hosted a six-week small business workshop series. The series culminated with a graduation ceremony on November 17, 2011. 

A new presentation of this series will start on April 12, 2012.
