SCORE has honored U.S. Rep. Richard Hanna (R- Barneveld) with the 2012 SCORE Congressional Champion award. The annual award recognizes outstanding advocacy and action within Congress and beyond on behalf of small businesses and their owners.

SCORE presented the award to Hanna today at his Utica office.

Last week in D.C., SCORE 2011 Small Business Champion award winner Senator Mary Landrieu, Chair of the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, hosted a summit focusing on issues that impact African-American small business owners working toward becoming entrepreneurs. The summit was titled, “Closing the Wealth Gap through the African-American Entrepreneurial Ecosystem.”

Not many entrepreneurs start planning their business almost a decade before doing it. But Rachel O’Leary, SCORE client and owner of Caffe Espresso in Green Bay, dreamed of business ownership long before pursuing it.  “There wasn’t a single, defining moment,” she said. “The desire built over the years and I always felt like it was something I wanted to do.”

Ryan Francis, the owner of Bath and Bliss, reached out to SCORE's retired business executives last winter but he wasn't sure what the organization's mentors could teach him after a decade in business making organic skin-care products.

Over the past 10 months, however, SCORE mentor Steve Martin has helped Francis boost online sales and revamp the company's line of merchandise, encouraging him to eliminate scents that weren't selling and to add products in the most popular scents. Online sales are up 127 percent from March to September, Francis said.

After he retired from his job as a financial specialist, Fair Lawn resident Howard Sirota, a long-time member of the Fair Lawn Jewish Center, tried playing tennis and bridge.

“It was fun,” he said, “but I wanted to give something back to the community.”

For the past 15 years, he has been doing exactly that, serving as a mentor for the Bergen County chapter of SCORE, based in Hackensack.

“When I help some people go into business, I feel very good about it,” he said.

"In 2007, I invested $23,000 in a small-business start-up.  The business was an automotive repair shop that Mr. Alevei was starting...We met with a mentor from SCORE, a nonprofit association funded by the Small Business Administration to support entrepreneurship. On a completely volunteer basis, our SCORE mentor took the time read our business plan and give us feedback."
