How SCORE Helped

I have been meeting with my SCORE Advisor on a monthly basis for the last two
years and in that time, I have grown tremendously as a business owner. His
experience in various facets of business management and leadership have helped
me to consider the challenges I face in new ways. He has helped me to come up
with creative and successful solutions to a variety of issues including time
management, hiring and growing my team, cash flow and financial projections,
and marketing my programs. His insights, experience and wisdom have been
invaluable to me and the growth of my business. In addition, when there have
been questions outside of his area of expertise, we have scheduled meetings
with other SCORE Advisors who have significant knowledge in areas such as
sales and insurance.

I highly recommend SCORE to any business owner I meet as it helps you to
separate yourself from the daily tasks in the business and actually take time
to work on your business growth and strategies. It has been instrumental for
me in the growth of my business and my entrepreneurial skills.

Following a number of years in the insurance industry, five years ago I left my job to have a child and be a stay-at-home mom. Now that my son is beginning school, rather than returning to work, I’m thinking about starting a business. What advice can you offer?  Read more...

College Nannies and Tutors

How SCORE Helped

Donna Balser, after being a stay-at-home mom for 15 years, wanted to reenter the workforce and decided to do something challenging and rewarding which would make a difference in the lives of families. The result was the formation of College Nannies and Tutors in 2007 which provides short and long term child care needs through experienced nannies and tutors to guide children through all stages of development from cradle to college.

Their business model is unique in that it takes an inclusive approach to doing what is right for families. After interviewing families and learning about their needs, personalities and their children, a “role model match” is made with a nanny or tutor that will work the best with the family situation.

This approach has been successful and the business now employs approximately 100 nannies and tutors plus 5 full time staff. Donna recently opened a third learning center in Austin and is celebrating her 5 year anniversary.

Donna has been working with SCORE since prior to the opening of the first learning center and continues to use the resources of SCORE as she expands her business.

"I will be forever grateful for the
guidance of my SCORE mentor.”

Childhood Development

How SCORE Helped

Butch and Maria Aggen own and operate The Goddard School, a private pre-school franchise, which specializes in early childhood development for children from six weeks to six years. The school operates on the premise that each child has a special and individual learning style. Goddard Developmental Guidelines, a core component of The Goddard School FLEX learning Program, form the basis of unique lesson plans brought to life for each child in fun and imaginative ways. They are committed to achieving excellence in all areas of the school’s operation

The Aggens’ have owned the business since 2007 and although successful, they turned to SCORE for help in planning for growth and expansion, improved customer satisfaction, profitability, employee retention and other areas. A recent customer survey showed an outstanding level of service provided by the faculty and word-of-mouth referrals have tripled.

SCORE has helped them to develop a strategic plan which included construction of an annex to expand capacity, consolidation of loans and the development of metrics to measure progress.

“Score has helped develop strategic
initiatives to take us from “very good”
 to excelling in key areas.”

Gymnastics For Kids

How SCORE Helped

Natalie Mckee is a gymnastics coach whose dream was to open her own facility for children ages 2 to 7. The business was only a concept when she first came to SCORE in 2007. She was encouraged to take her idea and break it down into achievable mile-stones.

Mentors set weekly and monthly goals and provided resources outside of SCORE who could help her with various key projects. The business became profitable after only five months of operation and continues to be successful after four years with 250 students enrolled and nine full time employees.

A unique feature of her program is a level system with a skill chart to track progress and offer incentives for the students to listen and work hard in class. This keeps them motivated and wanting to come back each week.  See Video...

Recently Natalie decided to buy out her business partner and again turned to SCORE for help. Mentors assisted her in learning the administrative side of the business from payroll to taxes and helped to facilitate the financial details of the buyout.

The next step is to add another 1,500 square feet to increase enrollment by 50% and eventually expand to work with students from 8 to 18.

“SCORE -
I can’t thank you enough!”
