After decades as a bakery chef and bakery school teacher, Jocelyn Lee Shoopman will launch her own business in Rancho Mirage, California this week. Banks and other lenders shied away from funding the startup. Shoopman sought help from SCORE counselor and longtime business owner Debbie Cohen. She couldn't qualify for an SBA loan, but she learned how to tap her retirement account to get iPastries off the ground.
“I wish I'd called (SCORE) years ago,” Shoopman said.
Broward SCORE participated today in Hispanic Unity of Florida’s 2012 Entrepreneur Summit. The event, with over 500 attendees, provided an opportunity for entrepreneurs to network, attend workshops, and fete the success of some of their peers.
Ana Chipana, a graduate of SCORE’s first Spanish language Simple Steps for Starting Your Business, was recognized by Hispanic Unity for her success in owning and operating WARA Quinoa, an organic bakery.

Children can be a never-ending source of worry, joy, entertainment, and if you’re lucky, sometimes even inspiration. That was the case for entrepreneurs Joanna and Andrea Dayco who were inspired by a bedtime ritual of “The Wishlist.” Each night, kids and parents alike would offer up what they wished to do the following day – whether it be hosting a playdate, doing arts and crafts or grabbing a coffee with a friend (for Mommy) - but often times these wishes got lost in the day to day hassle of errands and constant shuttling about town. Then one night it finally clicked – why not create a place where parents and kids alike could achieve all they wished for in a day? Suddenly the vision for Kookaburra Play Café, a premium indoor play facility for children and a modern coffee house setting where parents can relax and enjoy while the children play in a creative, clean, safe and friendly atmosphere, was born. Joanna and Andrea had the vision, passion and drive to make it happen. They turned to SCORE for help in researching, planning and preparing to obtain the financing they needed.
Kookaburra Café has become a vibrant hub of the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago. The team has managed to develop a strong sense of community not only through their unique play space and café combination but also with the addition of classes, special events and private parties.
What's Great About My Mentor?
“Our advisor, Earl Shraiberg’s guidance with our business plan was essential for obtaining our SBA loan,” Joanna said. Earl worked with the duo extensively to create a business plan with its roots in solid market research. The group continues to collaborate offering advice, guidance and encouragement as needed.
“The SBA holds the solution to safeguarding the crowdfunding process,” Schuster said. “As an entrepreneur, I want crowdfunding to pass of course, but I’m just as worried about fraud as are the bill's detractors.
