When family and friends would see the amount of yarn stored in Roz Klein's extra bedroom, their response was always the same, "You should open a yarn store."  After 35 years as an educator, retiring as director at Norfolk Collegiate's Middle School in June, Klein opened Baa Baa Sheep in Norfolk's Ghent neighborhood in August.

Klein received help with the business side of her store from her brother-in-law, Carlisle Wroton, who was active in the Hampton Roads Chapter of SCORE.

How SCORE Helped

I never imagined that a workshop on how to start a small business would be so inspirational, but that’s how I felt after participating in a day-long program sponsored by the Boston chapter of SCORE, the Service Corps of Retired Executives.

“Getting Started Workshop”

I attended SCORE’s “Getting Started Workshop,” and here’s the agenda for the day:

A workshop for persons who are planning to open a new business or who are looking for assistance in the operation of an exisiting business.

Key Topics Covered, include:
- Entrepreneurship: is it for you
- Is your Business Concept reasonable
- What is a Business Plan and why do one
- How to build a Business Plan
- How to Market your Business
- Do you need an Operational Plan
- Human Resources
- How will you Finance your business
- Building your Financial Plan
- Should you Incorporate
- What Advisors do you need
- What other Resources are available to help you

The Afternoon Sessions are small roundtable discussions lead by SCORE counselors.

Great discussions

There were about 15 people at the workshop. Many had well-developed business ideas. I don’t want to give away any secrets, but let me say it was inspirational to listen to the breadth and depth of initiatives in the making, covering various services, product development, and entertainment & leisure. By the end of the workshop, folks were exchanging cards and even seeing opportunities to work together.

The upbeat, constructive tone of the workshop was such a contrast to the dire economic news of the day. It brought together people from many different walks of life, personal backgrounds, and educational levels, sporting the kind of natural diversity that makes for a terrific sharing of ideas.

A blessed contradiction

During our small-group session in which people shared their business concepts and ideas, the counselor advised us not to undersell ourselves, suggesting that some businesses lose out because they do not charge enough for the products and services they deliver.

Well, it’s a blessed contradiction for us that SCORE counselors are giving away the kind of advice that one might pay thousands of dollars for in classes and one-to-one business consulting. In the process, they’re giving back to their communities by facilitating new businesses that generate jobs, opportunities, and hope.

Revelle Academy

Growing up in Norway, Evelyn Squires had a passion for ballet from an early age.  Upon settling in Sarasota, Florida she founded Revelle Academy to bring dance to the next generation. The academy has a strong underpinning of ballet but has responded to market demands by offering tap, jazz, flamenco, modern, lyrical and hip-hop dance instruction.  Evelyn says, “Our goal is to teach our students to work together, to believe in themselves, to appreciate the arts and music and to take a chance.  The training they get here, they can use for the rest of their lives.”

My Successes

Two years into the business, Revelle has 10 part-time employees in an 8,200 square foot facility catering to 175 students.

SCORE mentor Charlie Sax commented on Revelle’s success saying, “In a very bad economy, they grew their business dramatically.  She has a real passion for what she is doing.”

In 2009, Revelle Academy was named Manasota SCORE Small Business of the Year.  The business was recently chosen by Sam’s Club Holiday Cheer for Small Business program to receive a $1,000 gift card and funding to attend a 2-day SCORE “High Speed Growth Seminar” in Dallas, TX.  The award was given in recognition of the business’s growth and Evelyn’s commitment to ongoing learning.

How SCORE Helped

Evelyn’s mother-in-law, Heather, encouraged her to contact SCORE to fill in the gaps of her business knowledge.  SCORE mentors Charles Sax and Richard Radt taught Evelyn how to develop a business plan and then reviewed the plan with her.  The two mentors also brought in a banking specialist to advise on obtaining a loan.  When presented with an offer to buy out a competitor, her SCORE mentors helped Evelyn evaluate the possibility.

“They made me think about a lot of things I hadn’t thought of before, how to develop a mission statement, where was my money coming from,” she said.  “I would have made a lot more mistakes if they (SCORE) hadn’t helped.”
