SCORE Awards 2009

The first-ever SCORE Awards recognize and celebrate excellence in and support of America’s small businesses. SCORE honors four SCORE clients for their outstanding success. SCORE also honors key small business advocates and corporate supporters.

The SCORE Awards were held September 17, 2009 at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. Award winners include:

Each year, SCORE recognizes outstanding volunteerism on behalf of both SCORE and the small business community through its Lou Campanelli Award. The SCORE Foundation is pleased to present the 2009 Lou Campanelli Award to Barbara Kasoff, president and co-founder of WIPP, a national bipartisan public policy organization that advocates for and on behalf of women and minorities in business.

2009: Outstanding Woman-owned Business Award, Sponsored by Constant Contact: Zakeez, Inc., Houston, Texas
Yamile Jackson

SCORE honored Zakeez, Inc., an ergonomics and human factors company that specializes in research and development of innovative and unique products and services that improve the quality of life of children and help parents and babies feel closer to each other. The company was founded by Yamile Jackson, a Ph.D. in ergonomics and human factors engineering and licensed professional engineer, who used her personal experience, work and education to invent the award-winning “The Zaky®.” This product is used in hundreds of hospitals and thousands of homes and child-care facilities, and by preemies, ill, healthy and special-needs children worldwide.

2009: Outstanding Socially Progressive Business Award, Sponsored by the Office Depot Foundation: East Cooper Community Outreach (ECCO), Charleston, S.C.

ECCO was initially conceived in 1989 by Monsignor James A. Carter, pastor of Christ Our King Catholic Church, in response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Hugo. SCORE honored ECCO, which has fostered effective grassroots collaborations between neighbors in need of help and the neighbors who want to help them. In 2008, ECCO provided at least one basic need service to more than 5,000 clients.

2009: Outstanding Minority-owned Business Award, Sponsored by HP: Haas Media LLC, Jersey City, N.J.

SCORE honored Kim Haas, president of Haas Media, who combined her love of languages and cultures with communications to start her own business while living in Milwaukee in 2003. Haas Media is a communications company providing media consulting, community outreach, educational initiatives, training and editing services. Her firm provides English, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian translation for corporations, government agencies, small businesses, nonprofits and community organizations.

2009: Outstanding Veteran-owned Business Award, Sponsored by Administaff: Killer Peaks, Port Royal, S.C.
Jonathan Bekemeyer

SCORE honored Jonathan Bekemeyer, who opened Killer Peaks to focus on the history and future of skateboarding. Relying solely on the support of local skateboarders, Killer Peaks gives back by holding free community events and clinics, and helps maintain the local skateboard park through a network of volunteers. Killer Peaks also sponsors a team that competes with other skateboard teams in South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida, and plans to expand to a tournament in California.

The Lou Campanelli Award annually recognizes outstanding individual volunteerism, leadership, vision and philanthropy in support of small business, entrepreneurship and SCORE. A successful business owner and corporate executive for more than 20 years, SCORE honored Barbara Kasoff, an active supporter for small businesses, including women and minorities, both nationally and internationally. Currently, she is president, CEO and co-founder of WIPP, a nonprofit, bipartisan public policy advocacy organization with more than half a million members, including 49 business organizations, educating and advocating on economic issues for women in business.

2009: Corporate Small Business Supporter of the Year: American Express OPEN

SCORE honored American Express OPEN, which has renewed its alliance with SCORE to provide small business owners with free business counseling, timely workshops and peer networking as part of the Small Business Speed Coaching Test Drive Series, held in key U.S. markets. The series of single-day events delivered face-to-face counseling to more than 2,000 new and emerging small businesses. In addition, American Express OPEN sponsors the SCORE Web site, which helps SCORE reach millions of people online each year.

2009: Corporate Small Business Advocate of the Year: Ernst and Young
Ernst & Young logoSCORE honored Ernst & Young LLP, which focuses its efforts on three key areas that are aligned with its business strategy and crucial to improving and expanding market economies—entrepreneurship, education and environmental sustainability. Ernst &Young LLP has supported SCORE during the past three years by providing financial support to the programs and resources used by SCORE volunteers to mentor clients. In addition, John Carden, former vice chair at Ernst & Young LLP, serves on the SCORE Board of Directors, lending his expertise and experience to help grow the organization.
